White Center Art Walk: Calling all painters!

June 25th, 2011 Tracy Posted in Arts, White Center news Comments Off on White Center Art Walk: Calling all painters!

From White Center Art Walk organizers:

For the month of July, we are hosting as many local artists as we can for a Live Painting extravaganza! We are doing an open call for local artists that may be interested in participating. This will be a great opportunity for them to get out, meet new faces and make more contacts with our consistently growing art community.

Last month we hosted a highly successful ‘Mini-Film-Festival’ that brought us a bunch of new faces. They toured our list of participating artwalk venues and were treated with 3 different film
venues that showed a wide range of short films. Everyone-had-a blast.

This coming month we are hoping to do something similar while
highlighting some of our favorite local live painters.

We are looking for a wide range of artists that are willing to paint at one of our participating venues. The artwalk takes place July 16th, from 6-9pm. Participators are asked to show around 5:30 pm to set up. We are happy to provide drop-cloths if they don’t have one and will make an effort to rustle up an easel if need be.

Interested? Call Devrim ASAP. 206 484 0399.

White Center Art Walk: First film festival, and more

June 19th, 2011 Tracy Posted in Arts, White Center news Comments Off on White Center Art Walk: First film festival, and more

By Deanie Schwarz
Reporting for White Center Now

Saturday night’s drizzly cool weather might have kept a few folks from venturing outside, but lots of art lovers were evident at the monthly art walk in the White Center business district, which included a few firsts.

For one: Joining the art walk this month was Herbal Legends, the medical-marijuana dispensary which recently opened on 16th Ave. SW. Owner Chris Cody removed the marijuana from the premises and opened the doors to the community — the only venue to offer complimentary food and beverages. Five artists were showcased in the dispensary, which was designed specifically to display local artists’ work.

Rich Lehl, a Highland Park resident, showed his oils at Company.

Café Rozella owner Leticia Martinez debuted her couture-influenced fashion sketches. Leticia has training in fashion design and worked for couture and bridal designers before opening Cafe Rozella. More of her work can be found at the cafe, along with artist Renee Bacino‘s work.

Winning accolades from business owners and viewers alike for their efforts in bringing a free film festival with lots of local filmmakers to White Center, White Center Art Walk organizers Amanda Kay Helmick and Devrim Ozkan are shown here at the last film venue of the evening – Big Al Brewing.

With the theme of “Fairytales,” the evening’s first venue was Southgate Roller Rink, where the young and young-at-heart enjoyed a number of independent artists who shared their visions and stories with an appreciative audience.

Miranda Taylor, a High Point trustee and activist, was one of the five directors to show their films at Full Tilt Ice Cream. (Miranda’s short film “The Good Food Truck” is also available to view on Vimeo.)

The full listing of filmmakers is viewable at whitecenterartwalk.blogspot.com.

June 13th, 2011 Tracy Posted in Arts, White Center news Comments Off on Next weekend: June 18th’s White Center Art Walk lineup

Next Saturday, wander White Center and immerse yourself in art. Here’s the lineup announcement:

White Center 3rd Saturday Art Walk
June 18th, 2011 6 PM to 9 PM

In case you haven’t been doused in the awesomeness that is the June theme for White Center Art Walk, let me assist. White Center had a baby and that baby is called the WCAW -Film Festival ! (3) Locations. (3) Different times. (1) Great theme.

Big Al Brewing, Full Tilt Ice Cream & Southgate Roller Rink will be showcasing local work within varying categories. Animation, music videos, power pieces, light pieces, dark pieces, etc. Do some walking- it’s good for your heart.

Company (9608 16th SW): Rich Lehl- www.richlehl.com – Oil on Panel- Realism meets a thick sense of humor; playful paintings that highlight a moment in time that may just make you go Hmmmm (Thank you C&C Music Factory!). Wine specials till 10pm. Stop in and talk at the bartender- they like that.

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Amanda Kay Helmick- www.junkartkin.com – Recycled-Found-Material— I would categorize this as Organic & Industrial. Well executed and clean. Amanda rips, alters, sews, paints and combines found objects. Metal, wood, canvas, paint, and other randoms are manipulated into bold, chunky and meaty representations of temptation. Are we all logged on? Because there’s freaking delicious coffee to go with it. Don’t miss this and if you do, don’t tell your mom because she WILL put you in time out.

Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Dave Ryan- blog.shoptastyart.com – Hand Painted Records. If you’ve never run into Dave’s work around town, I’d be highly surprised. I’m pretty sure there may be more than one of him since he’s at any and all of the fun festivals and still manages to hang his artwork at a smattering of Seattle venues. Stenciled-Vinyl-Records with all the images you love to laugh at, hug & dance with. The Dude? On a record? In his bathrobe? Yes, please.

Salvadorean Bakery (1719 SW Roxbury): Amy Bradley- dragontamerdesign.com/ -Photography. Amy works with many

Dzul Tattoo (9622-B 16th Ave SW): Katie & Alex- Black & White Photography. Drop in for funky grooves and an eye-full of new body ink. Updated B&W photos of the newest generation of ink, dripping with permanence. This shop has spirit and enough eye-candy to chew on for days.

3.14 Bakery (9602 16th Ave SW): Amara Kopakova – amaraart.weebly.com/emerge.html – Acrylic Paintings- Moody, organic paintings that keep your eye moving. Kopakova is no foreigner to keeping your attention. Subject matter? People…or not…or landscape…or abstract… Wait, what was the question? Have you had a pastry on a stick yet? You should do that. Then write a strongly worded letter about it.

Full Tilt Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave SW): Some Guy- With Some Stuff- And Some Things- If I could post Justin’s personal phone number in this location, I would insist that you call and ask him about what’s going on the walls; but I can’t, so I won’t. As a result, you must trudge in, force-feed yourself delicious ice cream, drink a beer, play some skeeball and check out the walls on your own. Just so you know, we’re proud of you.

Proletariat Pizza – (9622-A 16th Ave SW)- Megan Thorberg-
www.facebook.com/Thorbot.designs– Stipple-ing Stippler- Stipple much? These pieces are awesome. They are colorful, vibrant and confined into fun shapes. The subject matter is light, the design factor is consistent, and you can totally tell she loves making these. Have you had the Ham & Egg yet? If you just answered ‘no’, shame on you.

WELCOMING!!! Herban Legends!
Herban Legends (Medical Marijuana Dispensary)- (9619 16th Ave SW)- Group Show!- These guys are showcasing some of the Northwest’s finest artists: Jenna Colby, Brendan Lenburg, Jeremy Orsben, Lawrence Seward, Matthew Carson – Possibly Sarah Bareck. Story behind the new mural at White Center’s New Angkor Market

June 5th, 2011 Tracy Posted in Arts, White Center news 2 Comments »

Story and photo by Deanie Schwarz
Reporting for White Center Now

New Angkor Market, at 16th SW and 98th SW, received a new mural during the annual White Center Spring Clean three weeks ago. We asked Pharin Kong of the Cambodian Cultural Alliance of Washington (whose members helped paint the mural) to explain what some of the new images represent, for those who are not familiar with Cambodian history and culture:

Kong says that the large script in the upper left translates simply to “market.” In the center of the mural, the image of the palace-like Angkor Wat Temple might be familiar, because it is a Khmer icon found on a field of red between two bars of blue on the Cambodian national flag. It is a sacred historical site, built as a state temple honoring Vishnu, part of the Hindu trinity godhead, by the King Suryavarman in the early 12th century of the Khmer empire.

The large smiling bodhisattva on the left is an image from the Bayon Temple, also a 12th century Buddhist temple famous for huge stone faces facing outward toward each compass direction. Many dozens of towers, each with their own bodhisattva image facing each direction, surround the temple.

At the far right of the mural, the golden lotus is depicted. The lotus is important to both Hinduism and Buddhism. A Hindu creation story tells of the birth of the lotus blossom from the primordial earth; each of the Hindu godheads of Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva are seen sitting upon the golden lotus. In Buddhism, enlightenment is associated with the lotus.

Got films? Videos? White Center Art Walk needs your work too – ASAP!

May 28th, 2011 Tracy Posted in Arts, How to Help, White Center news Comments Off on Got films? Videos? White Center Art Walk needs your work too – ASAP!

Next White Center Art Walk, organizers are going beyond the usual “walk around and look at stuff” plan – they’re organizing programs with films and videos, and they’re putting out an URGENT call for contributors. From Amanda:

Every month the White Center Art Walk is trying to “theme” our artwalk, and June’s theme is Film. We are trying to get together (3) film programs to show at (3) locations in White Center. One is the Southgate Skating Rink (a family-friendly program), Big Al’s Brewery (more edgy program) and Full Tilt (more music-filled program).

We are trying to put together this program wabi sabi, DIY style, without a lot of time to do it. What we are looking for are short films. Animation, music videos, power pieces, light pieces, dark pieces, etc. We are trying to get three 20 – 30 minute programs together. We can take each piece on a variety of formats, and will put it together at a location post production house in Seattle. The art walk is Saturday, June 18th.

This is an open call to locals, film organizations, film programs and schools. If interested, please send us an e-mail to whitecenterartwalk@gmail.com by next Friday, June 3rd, with your name, length of piece, subject matter and contact info. Unfortunately, there is no compensation for the use of the pieces, but there will be great exposure in Seattle’s coolest enclave.

White Center Art Walk, May edition, tonight! Here’s where to go

May 21st, 2011 Tracy Posted in Arts, White Center news Comments Off on White Center Art Walk, May edition, tonight! Here’s where to go

(Work by Jimmy Gersen, who’s showing at Salvadorean Bakery)
Tonight! Here’s the announcement of the highlights:

White Center 3rd Saturday Art Walk
May 21st, 2011 6 PM to 9 PM

Company (9608 16th SW): Eric Edwards -Collages from found material. This man-rocks-the-k(c)asbah! While we would never outlaw his goods or wall him in, he definitely pushes the envelope in an awe-inspiring package. Using found goods to make inventive, funky creatures; Eric takes collage to a higher level. Never uninteresting, never underwhelming, his art is much like his personality. Come check out his creations and enjoy wine specials until 10pm!

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Eric Edwards– – Collage out of found material—the family friendly version. Didn’t see enough of Eric at Company? Oh, good- me either. Dubsea will be sporting his animal-esque goodies for the May Art Walk.

Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Christina Thomas- Acrylic paintings on Toilet Paper. Must see. You may not recognize the mediums for what they are. Christina takes a super fragile item and manipulates into something bold and unrecognizable. Come in and enjoy the new Summer Ale on tap and un-doubt your doubting eyes.

Salvadorean Bakery (1719 SW Roxbury): Jimmy Gersen–Reproductions of large scale paintings. Loud, bright, bold-lined figures that are mainly made during live-painting performances. These edgy prints are well balanced and will definitely draw you in for another take. Take down some pastry goodness while you’re there.

Café Rozella (9434 Delridge Way SW): Renee Bazino – Landscape Photography & Paintings. Re-visit the beautiful places you’ve never been. Perhaps you do it over a hot cup of delicious coffee while sitting in a cozy café place. Repeat from last month stop in if you haven’t had a chance to see what’s gracing their walls.

3.14 Bakery (9602 16th Ave SW): Anna Hoychuck– . Anna does the three P’s: People, Pet and Product photography and she’s good at it. She pulls together relevant colors and subject matter into a crisp well-lit photo. Anna volunteers at the Seattle Humane Society taking photos of the newbies looking for homes, so she definitely scores in the cute-pup-photo-taking department. Come on down for a dollar ‘cakeball’ and some scrumptious photos!

Full Tilt Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave SW): Megan Thorberg- Prints. Boldlined B&W prints with an interesting twist. Blast from last month! This bold lined goddess will be gracing our visual ‘ceptors for another month. If you missed her last month, stop by for a waffle cone of Mexican Chocolate and a pint of delicious bubbly beer and soak in her graphic awesomeness.

Proletariat Pizza – (9622-A 16th Ave SW)- Mike Hipple. Pictures with a story. I’m not usually one for portrait photography but I have to say, Mike makes even me enjoy looking at pictures of strangers. He manages to make it all about the people, and not about the people at all. Each photo pulls you in through its composition and intense lighting. It’s almost like a free ticket out of here for as long as you wish to gaze. Oh, and do yourself a favor and order the ‘Ham and Egg’ Pie. It will make your life better.

ALSO! Please Welcome the Southgate Roller Rink to White Center!! (9646 17th Ave SW). They will soon be rolling into our growing artwalk family with rotating shows and a possibility for projected visual scrumptiousness! Stay tuned to see how they keep us groovy…
