Spectacular day for a Block Party – which is exactly what’s going to happen on 16th SW between Roxbury and 100th from 2 pm to 8 pm today during the White Center Spring Fling. Music, food, fun, and a chance to stroll in the street, since it’ll be closed to motor vehicles! More info here.

That’s a screenshot of the southernmost sales on the map for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, which we’ve been coordinating on behalf of our partner site West Seattle Blog since 2008, always the second Saturday in May. WSCGSD doesn’t have strict boundaries, and every year a few more North Highline sellers decide to jump in. You of course are welcome to shop everywhere else on the peninsula too – see the clickable map on WSB, and the printable list of sales linked from that page – a record 650+ this year! Sale day is this Saturday, May 9, official hours 9 am to 3 pm, though some sellers choose to start earlier and some to stay open later.

After the film, stay for an engaging audience discussion about how participation can strengthen neighborhoods right here in White Center.

Reporting for White Center Now

Tonight was the first of two nights for the White Center Night Market, hosted by the Cambodian American Community Council of Washington, at 16th/98th.

Many vendors with food and goods from different cultures were available. On the food side of things, offerings included Seattle’s Best BBQ, Let It Snow Hawaiian shaved ice, and Theary Cambodian Foods. Other vendors, such as Lucky Lotus Goods, Novelty Hill Apiary, and Charmed Chūk Jewelry offered fashion and various curiosities.

Featured musicians Dax Millian, Sally Phnouk, Drew Martin, and Young Chayylee performed tonight on the stage set up at the east end of the closed section of SW 98th. We were able to catch some of Dax Millian‘s [/] set:

Many community groups were also in attendance. Health advocates were there to promote the “Fun To Catch, Toxic To Eat” program, raising public awareness about the dangers of consuming non-salmon fish from the Duwamish River. The Cambodian American Community Council, besides hosting the event, was also there to provide information to the public and promote their project of building a local Khmer-American cultural center. The White Center Community Development Association also had a booth for community engagement.

Tomorrow is the second and final night of the White Center Night Market, and will feature even more vendors, booths, and performances, as they will have an additional part of 16th street blocked off for the event. They will start off the day with a car show from the Eazy Duz It Car Club at 2 PM, and the event will then go until 10 PM. Two big nights ahead in downtown White Center, starting tonight (Friday, September 26):

The Night Market is happening 5-10 pm tonight, 2-10 pm on Saturday, and you can see the full schedule here.

Next big event of the summer, the Eazy Duz It Car Club returns to the heart of White Center on Saturday (July 19) for the “Chrome and Community” car show and more. It’s set for 16th Avenue between 100th and Roxbury from 11 am to 7 pm. Advance registration is closed for cars but the Eazy Duz It website says you can show up and register on site! For spectators, entertainment and vendors will be there too.

10:50 AM: 11 am-3 pm today, you’ve got a chance to help the White Center Food Bank while trying food and drink from more than 30 local purveyors during the Taste of White Center – just look for the WCFB booths in the heart of downtown, buy your $5 tickets (each one gets you a small plate, or beverage, or treat, depending on what a venue’s offering) and get started! We’re headed there soon and will add updates.

Even if you’re not hungry – yet – you should be at the Taste of White Center! It’s a street party that, yes, is primarily to raise money for the White Center Food Bank, but there’s a lot of entertainment and information to be had too!

Dancers are in the Tim’s Tavern lot … and there’s a kid zone just north of 100th:

But back to the food. Maps show all 35 participating venues – including our partner site West Seattle Blog’s sponsors Alpine Diner and Big Mario’s Pizza:

Big Mario’s is serving up big slices of cheese pizza for your $5 ticket (buy tickets at the WCFB booth at 16th SW/SW 98th – each one gets you one of the designated dishes or drinks at participating businesses):

Participants are on White Center’s side streets too – even north of Roxbury in South Delridge, Young’s Restaurant, Max’s Triangle Pub, Can Bar, Nacho Mama, and Meat the Live Butcher. You can get a map/list, but not tickets, at the WCFB table on 16th right off Roxbury if you want to decide. All the ticket revenue goes to the WCFB; the participants are being compensated with sponsor funding. This continues until 3 pm!

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, which we coordinate for our partner site West Seattle Blog, has more White Center (and vicinity) sales than ever this year. Above is a framegrab from our map, so it’s not clickable, but you’ll find the clickable map (and a link to our printable guide) here – that’s how to get the exact locations, and brief descriptions, of all the sales. Shopping hours are 9 am-3 pm tomorrow, though you’ll see in descriptions that some sellers are starting earlier, some ending later, and others continuing Sunday.

Everyone’s invited to the first-ever White Center Spring Fling Block Party, presented by the White Center Business Alliance, with beer gardens, music, and more, noon-7 pm. But even if you’re not going, be aware that 16th SW is set to be closed to traffic for the event, between Roxbury and 100th. Updates later!

The first of two Saturdays with street festivals in White Center is tomorrow – the annual Khmer New Year Street Festival is set for 10:30 am-5 pm Saturday (April 26), SW 98th between 15th and 16th. You’re invited to celebrate with the Khmer community!

If there’s a little one in your family, this giveaway might be of interest – White Center Pride is giving away “spring buckets” at Dubsea Coffee this Saturday!

Heads-up to expect more bicyclists on White Center streets today (Sunday, April 13) – Cascade Bicycle Club‘s annual Ride for Major Taylor starts on the White Center Bicycle Playground 7 am-8:30 am and will take hundreds of riders on one of two courses – either circumnavigating the West Seattle/White Center peninsula, mostly via waterfront streets (with an Alki rest stop), or (updated) a White Center/Tacoma/Vashon/West Seattle route. You can see the route maps (26 miles or 62 miles) by going here. If you’re not registered, unfortunately, it’s too late – no same-day signups, according to Cascade, which explains that the ride honors “the legacy of Marshall ‘Major’ Taylor, the Black World Cycling Champion … as a fundraiser for Cascade Bicycle Club’s education and advocacy programs, including funding for snacks at after-school Major Taylor Project Clubs as well as support for Major Taylor Project students’ participation in the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.” P.S. The Bicycle Playground is where the ride ends, too.
