END OF THE LINE: White Center father and son on epic road trip

June 13th, 2017 Tracy Posted in People, White Center news Comments Off on END OF THE LINE: White Center father and son on epic road trip

The photo and report arrived tonight:

Today, White Center residents Mark Ufkes and his oldest son Patrick have finally reached the furthest point east on the North American continent that a person can drive to, Cape Spear in Newfoundland, Canada. The drive is over 5,000 miles from Seattle. The Seattle Heart Canada sign is a big hit here. People honking and waving all the time. Next stop, Ice Berg Alley, and then a drive across Labrador in search of Polar Bears to photograph before heading home.

We don’t know what route they took but if you put Seattle and Cape Spear into Google Maps – here’s what you get.

FOLLOWUP: Unified Brewing to take over ex-Big Al’s

June 13th, 2017 Tracy Posted in Beverages, White Center news 3 Comments »

Just in – the announcement that the former Big Al Brewing location at 9832 14th SW in White Center has a new brewery moving in:

After nearly two years of searching for a location, and trying to keep our plans under wraps, we are excited to introduce to the world, Unified Brewing Company. We recently signed a long-term lease to move into the old Pacific Rim Brewing / Big Al Brewing location in White Center. There has been a brewery in that building for nearly twenty years and we’re happy that we can continue that tradition of being White Center’s Brewery.

We’ll be doing a little more than putting on a fresh coat of paint. We recently put down our deposit on a new 20bbl Brewhouse from JVNW out of Canby Oregon, a manufacturer we feel is at the top of their game for brewing equipment. We’ll brew a wide variety of styles to be served in our brewpub as well as some limited distribution.

Our team collectively has over 50 years experience in the beer world in all facets from Production, Importing, Distribution, and Publican:

Our partner and Brewer, Kevin Watson, has brewed for over 18 years for the likes of Hales, Allagash, and most recently Elysian Brewing. Having grown up in White Center, he is pleased to be making beer just down the street from where he played little league and mere blocks from where he first homebrewed in his parents kitchen.

Mike Baker, former founder and owner of Baron Brewing Company in South Park, Seattle, is also responsible for bringing delicious German beers to the U.S. through his import company NW Beverage Group.

Dean Hudgins and Ian Roberts are the owners of The Pine Box, a successful craft beer bar on Capitol Hill.

New to the beer biz is Larry Solomon, a friend from across the bar top with a wealth of business knowledge.

Mike Baker and Ian Roberts are also two of the founders and organizers of Seattle Beer Week, a ten-day celebration of all things beer across the city, now going on its 10th year.

With all of our renovations, licensing, and equipment on order, we plan to be open to the public early 2018.

VIDEO: North Highline concerns, questions, and answers @ King County Community Service Area ‘town hall’

June 8th, 2017 Tracy Posted in King County, White Center news Comments Off on VIDEO: North Highline concerns, questions, and answers @ King County Community Service Area ‘town hall’

1:06 AM: In case you wanted to go to Wednesday night’s “town hall” for North Highline, part of the King County Community Service Area program, but couldn’t – we recorded the presentations and Q/A. It was held at Seola Gardens.

Of the three top-billed county officials mentioned in previews, King County Council Chair Joe McDermott – who represents our area on the council – and Deputy County Executive Rhonda Berry were there; Sheriff John Urquhart was not – his chief of technical services (including 911) Patti Cole-Tindall was there instead. Many other county officials there, including County Assessor John Arthur Wilson, County Transportation Department Director Harold Taniguchi, County Parks Director Kevin Brown, and more – you will see all the introductions at the start of our video, which runs an hour and a half and is unedited. Alan Painter, manager of the Community Service Area program, facilitated.

7:33 AM: One attendee, community advocate Gill Loring, tells WCN that a participating county official talked with him afterward to correct something she had said – Karen Freeman from the county executive’s staff said that local businesses are not required to have garbage pickup, but later acknowledged that’s inaccurate – they are.

North Highline Unincorporated Area Council talks land, safety

June 7th, 2017 Tracy Posted in North Highline UAC, White Center news 1 Comment »

Tonight, the annual King County Community Service Area town-hall meeting for North Highline is set for 7 pm at Seola Gardens (11215 5th SW).

Those in attendance at last Thursday’s North Highline Unincorporated Area Council meeting got several reminders that it will be a good place to take concerns about ongoing issues.

Those concerns included the ongoing unauthorized camping along Myers Way, the plan currently under review for a marijuana-processing facility on the basement level of the building where Beer Star just opened, and the big multifamily-housing complex under construction at the old grocery site in Top Hat.

Also at the NHUAC meeting: Charlie Governali, King County’s land conservation projects manager, was a guest. He was asked if there was any chance the county could buy the Myers Way Parcels. No, he said, that’s city of Seattle property. Meantime, he was asked about trade-offs for developers that can help preserve land. One example, he said, are fees that go directly to the conservation fund, but that doesn’t happen often in the county’s unincorporated area. He asked for suggestions of green spaces that should be preserved, and NHUAC president Liz Giba suggested that when the King County Public Health building that currently houses the Mary’s Place shelter is available, that would be a good addition to the nearby parkland. (Currently there’s an early-stage plan to develop the site, including the White Center Food Bank HQ to the south, into affordable housing and headquarters for nonprofits.)

The other guest was Carlos Marquez, who spoke about Block Watches and the Citizen’s Academy. For the former, he’s working on reviving Block Watch captains’ meetings, initially the Burien and North Highline captains, and he expects to have more information by fall. Before then, Night Out is coming up on August 1st, and people can get started now on forming Block Watches. He had suggestions for safety improvements at home – more lighting, video doorbell, better networking with neighbors. And: “If you see something, say something.”

NHUAC SCHEDULE: July’s meeting will be board-only, but the board hopes to see everyone at this year’s new-and-improved Jubilee Days festival. No meeting in August, but September, it’ll be back to the first Thursday, 7 pm, NH Fire District HQ (1243 SW 112th) – watch northhighlineuac.org for updates in the meantime.

New information today on a case we reported yesterday on partner site West Seattle Blog after learning of this big police response on SB Highway 509 (shown in our video above).

Police now believe the death of a 25-year-old man in an unauthorized encampment on the slope between 509 and Myers Way was a homicide. This morning, they reported a 43-year-old man has been arrested and jailed. The cause of the victim’s death has not yet been announced but police say they learned “an assault” had taken place. The suspect has a fairly lengthy criminal record, according to state records online; the felony cases are mostly drug-related.

Suspect arrested in early-morning shooting that killed 1 woman

June 6th, 2017 Tracy Posted in Crime, King County Sheriff's Office, White Center news Comments Off on Suspect arrested in early-morning shooting that killed 1 woman

One woman is dead and another in custody after an early-morning shooting. From King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Cindi West:

The shooting happened just before 1 am in the parking lot of the Avenue Apartments in the 10700 block of 14th Ave SW [map]. Police responded to the complex after receiving numerous 911 calls of a shot being heard.

When police arrived they found a 28 year old woman lying in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 28-year-old, who reportedly fired the shot, was taken into custody at the scene and transported to Highline Hospital with minor injuries from the fight.

Detectives learned the women knew each other and had been at a party at a nearby apartment prior to the shooting. Detectives are interviewing witnesses to determine what led up to the shooting.

Sgt. West says the suspect will be booked later this morning for investigation of murder.

ORIGINAL REPORT, 10:53 PM TUESDAY: If you’re seeing/hearing a big King County Sheriff’s Office response south of downtown White Center – we’re hearing via the scanner that Super Saver Foods at 10616 16th SW is reported to have been robbed at gunpoint. KCSO was told that five people were involved; no description so far. The store’s online listing says it’s usually open until 11 pm on Tuesday nights, so this happened shortly before closing time.

UPDATE, 11:02 AM WEDNESDAY: From Sgt. Cindi West of KCSO, who says it was a shoplifting case turned to robbery:

3 juvenile males went into the Super Saver and stole some drinks. A security guard followed them out of the store. The three suspects went outside and met up with 2 other juveniles. The security guard confronted the teens and one produced a handgun and threatened the security guard. The suspect then ran. Patrol deputies located the suspect who had displayed the handgun and threatened the guard nearby. He was arrested and booked into the Youth Services Center for Robbery. K-9 attempted a track for the other suspects but none were located.

The Opportunity to Be Informed, Be Involved and Be Heard!

Natural Resources Are Vital to a Healthy Community: Surroundings that don’t encourage daily exercise or provide clean air and nutritious food too often lead to depression, obesity, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. King County’s Land Conservation Projects Manager, Charlie Governali, will tell us about the County’s Land Conservation Initiative. The Initiative is an effort to conserve 60,000+ acres, including natural areas, trails, urban greenspaces, farmlands, and forestlands. Which natural resources around North Highline should be protected? Should they be used for walking trails, garden areas, parks or ???

Our Neighborhoods Matter: Carlos Marquez, a Community Service Officer with the KCSO, will be joining us to share two important ways we can help deal with some of the issues facing North Highline. Carlos will explain the importance of Block Watch, how Block Watch works, and the fundamentals of organizing a Block Watch. He will also educate us about the upcoming Citizen’s Police Academy and the different topics it covers. Don’t miss this chance to learn how you can be empowered to help our community!

Our community certainly matters to Deputy Bill Kennamer. Deputy Bill will join us once again to help increase our awareness of what is happening in North Highline.

Good of the Order: Do you have something of community import on your mind? Join us and share!

See you Thursday, June 1st at 7 PM – Because Knowledge Is Power!

Opening night for Beer Star in downtown White Center

May 26th, 2017 Tracy Posted in Beverages, White Center news Comments Off on Opening night for Beer Star in downtown White Center

A building with quite a past has just stepped into its future. It’s opening night for Beer Star, on the southwest corner of SW 98th and 16th SW in downtown White Center. 700 bottled and canned beers…

48 on tap …

Even a kids’ play area.

The building’s past identities include the Epicure Restaurant and, more recently, The Wall, The Hang-Around, a medical-marijuana lounge, and the Rose Petals restaurant. The team behind Beer Star, per Eater, is headed by James Weimann and Deming Maclise, who have venues elsewhere in the city, and the space will soon include a Li’l Woody’s burger joint – you’ve probably seen the sign on the east side of the building; Li’l Woody’s already has a WC tie, making its shakes with Full Tilt Ice Cream.

Meantime, if you want to be part of Beer Star’s first night, it’s expected to be open until 10 pm.

ROAD WORK ALERT: Major repaving project starts soon on Highway 509

May 25th, 2017 Tracy Posted in Traffic, Transportation, White Center news Comments Off on ROAD WORK ALERT: Major repaving project starts soon on Highway 509

If you use Highway 509 – you’ll want to know about this. From WSDOT:

Construction season is in full swing and in Burien, a project to repave northbound State Route 509 will soon join the mix.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will repave more than 3.5 miles of the highway between South 168th and South 112th streets to create a smoother driving surface. They will also repair and replace portions of guardrail. The $4.6 million project begins Sunday, June 4.

“Driving this section of SR 509 is no picnic. The pavement is worn and rough,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Aleta Borschowa. “Some of the guardrail is also in need of repair, so we will actually replace it with concrete barrier, which is easier to push back into place following a collision.”

Also known as the Burien Freeway, this section of northbound SR 509 is cracked and rutted from years of vehicle traffic. Approximately 28,000 vehicles use this section of roadway each day, which was last repaved in the mid-1990s.

Plan for travel delays during construction

· Drivers should expect single lane, ramp and shoulder closures on northbound SR 509 during daytime and nighttime hours for paving work.

· Crews will need to close the left lane of northbound and southbound SR 509 for a total of three weekends and occasional weeknights to repair and replace the guardrail in the median.

Know before you go

· For more information on scheduled lane reductions and detours, visit the King County construction page.

WSDOT contractor, Tucci & Sons, Inc., expects work on the $4.6 million project to wrap up in fall 2017.

FOLLOWUP: Charging documents say White Center murder victim shot ‘without provocation’

May 19th, 2017 Tracy Posted in Crime, White Center news Comments Off on FOLLOWUP: Charging documents say White Center murder victim shot ‘without provocation’

When we published the King County Sheriff’s Office request for help yesterday in finding murder suspect Billy D. Williams, we didn’t have the documents detailing the charges against him.

Now we do.

Williams, 30, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree unlawful gun possession; the latter relates to a robbery conviction dating back to 2004.

If and when he’s caught, the warrant sets his bail at $1 million, saying he “executed” victim James Little “without provocation.” The charging documents detail what’s already been reported – that Little was among those trying to break up a fight that started in the Taradise Café and spilled out into the street. But they have a few more details of the circumstances, saying that Little was shot while talking to a woman who had been in the bar and had gone back to her car; he approached her, she told investigators, and knew her name, and started to talk to her when she heard a “pop” and saw Little fall to the ground. Both she and another witness saw the shooter get into a car and leave the scene. Surveillance video confirmed what they saw, and showed, according to the charging papers, that, “prior to the shooting, there appears to be no interaction or altercation between Little and the suspect.” A third witness identified the shooter as Williams, saying he had known Williams for years.

The vehicle believed to be used in the getaway, a white 2000 BMW, was found somewhere in West Seattle on May 11th, according to the charging papers. It had damage consistent with the car shown in security video, and inside, investigators found a Seattle SuperSonics hat that Williams was believed to be wearing at the time of the shooting.

As for where he is – still a mystery so far as we’ve heard; we just checked the jail register and he’s not there yet. If he’s in custody by June 1st, that’s the date set for his arraignment, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office tells us. Meantime, call 911 if you have any information on Williams’ whereabouts.

(Also posted on partner site West Seattle Blog)

Can you help find a murder suspect? The King County Sheriff’s Office has just identified a suspect in the May 7th murder of James Little in White Center, and released his photo, asking for your help to track him down:

A Murder 1 warrant has been issued for Billy D. Williams, 30, of Oregon, for the May 7th murder of Seattle resident James Little, 30.

Little was attending a birthday party at a bar in the 9800 block of 16 Ave SW when a group of women got into a fight. The fight ended up outside and the women eventually separated.

Little approached a group of people across the street when Williams, who was in the group, pulled a gun and shot him in the head, killing him.

Detectives have not released a motive for the shooting but said Williams has ties to Albany, Oregon and Seattle. Williams is described as a black man, 30, 5’8”, medium build.

If you have information regarding the whereabouts of Williams you can call 911 or you may remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up to $1000 by calling Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
