Local students’ pet-food drive ‘an overwhelming success’

May 11th, 2013 Tracy Posted in Pets, Schools, White Center news 1 Comment »

The recent pet-food donation drive by White Center-headquartered West Seattle Montessori/West Seattle Academy brought in 2,471 pounds of food! Heather Aquino shares photos and a report:

The West Seattle Academy’s 7th graders collected more than a ton of dog, cat, and even bird food for their school-wide pet food drive. The drive lasted three weeks and was a spirited contest between all of the classes in West Seattle Montessori and West Seattle Academy. The Yellow Room donated the most food, with a whopping 724 lbs donated to the cause. They were treated to an ice-cream party hosted by the 7th graders on Thursday, May 9th.

The report continues:

On Friday, May 3rd the 7th graders loaded up the school van with all of the large bags of dog and cat food and headed to the Humane Society of Seattle to drop it all off, take a tour of their facilities, and learn about how their donations help local families, senior pet owners on limited incomes, and people with terminal illnesses lacking the essential resources needed to tend for their furry companions.

With the bulk of the collected food being donated to the Humane Society, there is still a substantial amount that will be dispersed to smaller, local animal shelters in our community. The drive was an overwhelmingly huge success. Thank you to the Yellow Room and all of the students of West Seattle Montessori and Academy for an amazing experience that benefited not only the Humane Society, but that also inspired the giving spirit of our 7th graders.

Male Shiba Inu found in White Center – know whose it is?

July 23rd, 2012 Tracy Posted in Pets, White Center news Comments Off on Male Shiba Inu found in White Center – know whose it is?

This was sent in for the lost/found-pets section on partner site West Seattle Blog, but he turned up in WC:

Unaltered male Shiba Inu found this afternoon around 4:30 in White Center east of McLendon. No collar or identification (I added the red collar for manageability), friendly and good natured. Fetches and sits like a champ. I have no doubt someone owns and loves this guy, likely he pulled out of a collar or escaped from an open door or gate. Please contact me … if this is your dog or you know who’s it is. If I don’t hear from anyone I will take him to Animal Control (this) morning to see if he is chipped. 206.234.7445, ppeerman@gmail.com

Lost Weimaraner dog from West Seattle might be in White Center or Highland Park

May 9th, 2011 Tracy Posted in Pets, White Center news 2 Comments »

The dog added to our West Seattle Blog Lost/Found Pets Page on Sunday evening disappeared from the Gatewood area but might be in White Center, according to a sighting that came in Sunday night. The dog’s owner has been notified, but we don’t have word yet of a reunion, so we are publishing a heads-up here too: August is a 2-year-old Weimaraner, not wearing his collar. Anne from South Park was headed east on Roxbury when she saw a Weimaraner running in traffic west near 8th and Roxbury and sent WSB a note about it. She’s also talked to August’s owner, Joshua, and she notified police. If you see a dog that looks like August, you can reach Joshua at 206-856-5860.

From Audrey at the White Center Food Bank – an announcement!

Now through March 13, 2010, the White Center Kiwanis will be collecting dog and cat food for the White Center Food Bank.

Pet food can be dropped off at A Place for Pets (431 SW 152nd, Burien), Hotwire Online Coffeehouse in West Seattle (4410 California Ave SW), or the Law Offices of Gerald Robison (648 S. 152nd, Suite 7, Burien) by March 13. On March 13, 2010, pet food can be dropped off at the White Center Food Bank (10829 8th Ave SW, White Center) from 10 am to 4 pm. Volunteers from local Key Clubs and Kiwanis Clubs in the region will be volunteering at the White Center Food Bank to receive donations. On-line donations can also be made online at www.whitecenterfoodbank.org.

The pet food collected during the drive will help low income families to feed their pets. Providing pet food to the food bank allows community member not to have to choose between feeding their pets and paying other bills. The White Center Food Bank feeds 1,700 families each month. During these times of high unemployment, people are coming to the food bank that never needed to come before.

The Kiwanis Pet Food Drive is part of the Governors Project K-9. The project challenges Kiwanis members/clubs or districts to complete a Service Project to volunteer with, learn about or donate to an organization that helps dogs or uses dogs to help people.

For more information about the Kiwanis Pet Food Drive, contact the White Center Food Bank’s Food Drive Coordinator Audrey Zemke at (206) 762-2848 or audrey@whitecenterfoodbank.org
