Invitation to cheer the Evergreen team

September 26th, 2008 Tracy Posted in Schools, Sports Comments Off on Invitation to cheer the Evergreen team

Back from the Nickelsville sweep (22 arrests in all). I will link here to a full report with video that I will be filing at West Seattle Blog a bit later. Meantime, switching gears in a HUGE way, the White Center Now mailbox just yielded this, and I wanted to be sure to pass it along:

My name is Alfred Johnson and I am the Football Booster Director for Evergreen High School.

On behalf of Head Coach David Lewis and his Staff, I would like to invite the community to come out
to the first Home Game for the Evergreen Wolverines Varsity Football Team.

The game is this Saturday, Sept 27, 2008 at Highline Memorial Stadium.

The game starts @ 7:00pm.

As stated before, this is the first Home Game for the Wolverines this season and we would love for the community to come and support our boys as they battle Tyee High School.

Thank you for your support and hope to see you at the game.

Go, Wolverines!

Meet Mount View Elementary School’s new principal, Mark Demick

September 17th, 2008 Tracy Posted in Highline School District, People, Schools, White Center news 3 Comments »

That shelf of quirky collectibles (if you’re over 40 like me, the lunchboxes may strike a note of nostalgia!) graces the office of Mount View Elementary‘s new principal Mark Demick, who says they’re just items he’s picked up “along the way.” And what a way it’s been, bringing him from his first teaching job in the farming community of Delano, California — where parent/teacher conferences were sometimes held at vineyard worksites – to this new role in White Center. Read on to find out more about him, why he’s excited about the job, and what he hopes to do: Read the rest of this entry »

Coming to a school near you: Student info, online

September 11th, 2008 Tracy Posted in Online, Schools, Technology, White Center news Comments Off on Coming to a school near you: Student info, online

From the Highline School District eHighlights blog: Three schools (none in White Center, though) are now using the district’s new online info system eSIS – and by next school year, all schools in the district are expected to be plugged into it. Read more here; also check out several other new posts on eHighlights, including a $10,000 grant for the New Start High School library. Meantime, watch White Center Now later today for our interview with Mount View Elementary’s new principal, following his first week on the job.

Back to school tomorrow: Who’s new

September 2nd, 2008 Tracy Posted in Schools, White Center news Comments Off on Back to school tomorrow: Who’s new

Looking ahead to the start of school tomorrow for Highline Public Schools (Seattle too, if you’re on that side of the line): One of White Center’s public schools has a new principal – Mark Demick is starting his first year leading Mount View Elementary, after almost a decade of principal work in Federal Way. Here’s his online message to families.

Countdown to the 1st day of school: Getting there

August 30th, 2008 Tracy Posted in Schools, White Center news Comments Off on Countdown to the 1st day of school: Getting there

If you’re not already a regular user, Highline Public Schools‘ web site has tons of information for families, well-organized and specific. That includes bus schedules for each school; they’re all linked here. If you’re in Seattle Public Schools‘ service area, general transportation information is here – though not specific stops, which are available on a phone hotline – plus maps to walking routes for each school. Wednesday is the first day of classes in both districts (private schools’ start dates vary; Holy Family, for example, starts Tuesday).

School’s “temporary” move to White Center may last longer

August 27th, 2008 Tracy Posted in Schools, White Center news 2 Comments »

West Seattle Montessori is moving into a location by the White Center Library, since its longtime WS location is the site of a new Harbor Properties development. That’s old news, but this isn’t: WSMS had been talking with Harbor about having a home in the new building at its old site, but Harbor told us this morning that those talks are no longer under way — apparently the cost and effort of moving into one new location, only to vacate it a year or so later, wasn’t going to work so well.

Midnight madness at White Center’s Evergreen High

August 19th, 2008 Tracy Posted in Schools, Sports Comments Off on Midnight madness at White Center’s Evergreen High

Football’s an all-weather sport – good thing, since according to this Times blog post, the Evergreen High School football team is scheduled to start practicing just after midnight, and it’s not likely to be your typical summer night.
