North Shorewood Park needs you! One week from tomorrow, spend part of your day there with your fellow community members – 9 am-1 pm on Saturday, July 11th, to be specific. The invitation comes from Lina @ King County Parks:

Join King County Parks staff and community members at this wonderful White Center park as we work together to make North Shorewood Park awesome. Our goal is to make the park a healthier and safer place for people and animals so that our community can enjoy this lovely forest. We will be digging out aggressive plants that are doing damage to the health of the park. As part of the event, we will also walk the trails as a group and I will share information about the great native plants that are growing in the park.

Young people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Any minors attending the event without a parent or legal guardian must also bring a signed youth waiver to event in order to participate. Please contact Lina Rose, lina.rose@kingcounty.gov, 206.491.5014, for a copy of the waiver, more information, and to sign up.

North Shorewood Park is at 10061 21st SW.

White Center, West Seattle, South Park nonprofits you can support during today’s GiveBIG donation drive, including ‘Dine Out For Hunger’ for WC Food Bank

May 5th, 2015 Tracy Posted in How to Help, White Center news Comments Off on White Center, West Seattle, South Park nonprofits you can support during today’s GiveBIG donation drive, including ‘Dine Out For Hunger’ for WC Food Bank

Again this year, dozens of area nonprofits are participating in today’s GiveBIG one-day donate-a-thon coordinated by the Seattle Foundation. The money you give TODAY ONLY to any or all of the participating nonprofits goes beyond face value – it boosts their eligibility for a “stretch pool” of partial matching funds, to be distributed proportionately depending on how much each participating organization raises during GiveBIG, by 11:59 pm tonight.

VERY IMPORTANT: You **must** donate through the special pages all participants have on the GiveBIG website, NOT via the organizations’ own websites. So here’s our list of those special pages for participating White Center, West Seattle, and South Park-based or -founded/-connected nonprofits. The special links take you to pages on the Seattle Foundation website with background information, as well as the donation links to use for this one-day event. Please also note that some organizations require an extra step – the “go here” link takes you to their “fiscal sponsor” or parent organization and then you MUST write the local org’s name in the “comments” area. (P.S. Please let us know if we missed a WC, WS, or SP-based organization – post a comment or e-mail us ASAP at whitecenternow@gmail.com so we can check it out – thanks!)

WestSide Baby making an emergency move – still in White Center – so it can keep helping kids and families

April 19th, 2015 Tracy Posted in How to Help, WestSide Baby, White Center news 1 Comment »

Earlier this month, on partner site West Seattle Blog, we reported on a small fire with a big effect on WestSide Baby‘s operations – shutting down the WS Baby volunteer/donation center in White Center, from which the nonprofit serves thousands of families around the area. The resulting power outage isn’t fixed yet. So WS Baby’s executive director Nancy Woodland has announced they’re making an emergency move – not far, but it leaves them in urgenet need of multiple types of help:

On April 9, WestSide Baby’s main facility in White Center experienced a small electrical fire that eliminated power for our donation and volunteer center. This means we’ve been unable to fill orders for 350 children per week as the building is completely dark, cold and unsafe. Because this is not the first time this building has had major maintenance issues, we have decided to take a brave step and move our entire operation within the next week because leaving children in the lurch is unacceptable to us.

To get up and running as soon as possible, over the next 10 days we are moving our main donation and volunteer operations across the street into a warehouse where we have been storing diapers! We plan to open our doors at 10002 14th Ave SW by April 27.

This is a plan we have been working on for some time and had actually hoped to execute this summer. Because of the fire and resulting urgency, we have now divided it into Phases and we’ll start a little earlier than we expected by moving one component of our organization now. We’re excited to share updates on Phase 2 and 3 soon. It’s going to be great and we hope you will be excited to participate in our growth!

We have a list of opportunities for you to support this effort with your time or treasure. Both are critical at this point in order for us to be able to get back up and running and filling orders as soon as possible.

You can donate now at WestSideBaby.org to help us with the following things to get set up quickly:

Critical for Phase 1:

Shelving – $5000 Total ($300/each)
Signage – $2000
Pallet Stacker – Rent or Purchase
Canvas Bins – $1000 Total ($250 each)
Moving and Storage Expenses – $10,000

Things we’ll need for Phase 2 -3:

Moving Expenses – $15k
Industrial Carpet/Flooring
Painting help
Lumber

We will also have Volunteer Opportunities:

Tuesday, April 21 6-7 pm Car Seat moving
Friday, April 24 3-6 pm Shelf Assembly
Saturday, April 25 10 – 5 Moving!!
Sunday, April 26 9 – 5 Deconstruction of old facilty and clean up
Soon after – a small masonry and curb installation project needs a skilled professional

Contact Volunteer Manager, Shana Allen (shana@westsidebaby.org), if you are interested! We have some flexibility with this schedule and we anticipate more things unfolding this week. These are all physical projects.

To help us with backlog – we anticipate announcing additional Sorting Frenzies and Order Filling Opportunities the week of April 27. Let Shana know if you want to be on the lists to receive those updates!!

VIDEO: 2015 White Center 5K in semi-surprise sunshine

March 28th, 2015 Tracy Posted in How to Help, White Center 5K, White Center news 1 Comment »

After a rainy night, semi-surprise sunshine greeted the third annual White Center 5K this morning. Our video, above, shows the runners/walkers heading out from the starting line at White Center Heights Park. One thing that sets it apart from many other 5Ks is the superhero theme – and costume-clad participants were all for it:

The White Center 5K is a benefit for local nonprofits, including the White Center Food Bank, whose development director Kristina Dahl (in our photo, below, with executive director Rick Jump) was in Wonder Woman costume:

Also benefiting: The White Center Community Development Association and the YES Foundation of White Center. Community members joining in the 5K included local businesspeople like the Albaeck family from Proletariat Pizza:

For the 276 participants who wore timers, the results are already up on this page – the top male finisher was 42-year-old Steven Colmus, at 22:42, and top female finisher was 35-year-old Alisha Winger at 24:56. Top listed youth finisher was 12-year-old Tessa Surface at 31:21. Congratulations to all!

White Center Eagles invite you to breakfast to help the Evergreen Wolverines baseball team

February 27th, 2015 Tracy Posted in How to Help, Schools, Sports, White Center news Comments Off on White Center Eagles invite you to breakfast to help the Evergreen Wolverines baseball team

The Evergreen Wolverines need you to help them take the field for this year’s high-school baseball season. Simple and tasty way to do that – breakfast, one week from tomorrow! Here’s the announcement:

The White Center Eagles Club (FOE) is holding a fundraising breakfast on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 9 AM to 1 PM at the White Center Eagles Club located at 10452 15th Ave. SW, in support of the Evergreen High School boys’ baseball team – the “Wolverines.”

Because of recent thefts of equipment and lack of funding, the team is in desperate need of basic equipment and field improvements to field a team this season. Baseball lovers from Southwest Seattle, White Center, Burien, SeaTac and surrounding areas are asked to contribute to help put a team on the field for 2015. Members of the team and coaching staff will be present to help serve breakfast. For any further information please contact the White Center Eagles Club at 206-248-1400.

Help for the holidays: White Center Food Bank can use some from you, ASAP

October 25th, 2014 Tracy Posted in How to Help, White Center Food Bank, White Center news Comments Off on Help for the holidays: White Center Food Bank can use some from you, ASAP

From Audrey @ White Center Food Bank:

MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO HUNGRY FAMILIES AT THE WHITE CENTER FOOD BANK

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of hungry families in the community? White Center Food Bank needs volunteers every weekday and food for the holidays.

You can be on the front lines of hunger by coming to the food bank to pass out food. In an average distribution, we see 40 to 70 families who receive meat, food staples, milk, egg and produce. Including set up and clean up this shift takes about 4 hours. We need help Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays starting at 9:00 am.

Like to lift boxes? You can help in the warehouse on Tuesdays when we load and unload trucks and organize the warehouse. The work starts around 10:00 am and can last until 2:00 pm or longer depending on the amount of donations.

If you have a clean driving record and can lift 40 pounds, we would love to have you drive the food bank van to local businesses to pick up donations. We regularly pick up from Safeway, QFC, Starbucks, Super Saver, Essential Bakery and other generous businesses. Thursday morning is the shift you can help the most but other days especially around the holidays are busy too. If you’re not sure if this is right for you, I can arrange a ride along as helper so you can get an idea of the experience.

The holidays are coming up and the White Center Food Bank would like to provide the fixings for holiday meals for about 600 families each of the next two months. You can help by providing turkeys, boxed stuffing, canned pumpkin, evaporated milk, whole olives, canned yams or sweet potatoes, and pudding or jello mixes or by donating online at www.whitecenterfoodbank.org and designating your donation for holiday food.

Your help is important to be able to provide clients with good customer service and holiday food. Email or call me to get involved.

Tonight: Cheer for local student filmmakers from Cascade Middle School!

April 15th, 2014 Tracy Posted in How to Help, Schools, White Center news 1 Comment »

Something awesome to do tonight, to support students from White Center AND one of WC’s special natural spots:

I’m a science teacher at Cascade Middle School who also helps run an after school science club for girls called STARS. STARS stands for Students Tackling Authentic and Relevant Science, and aims to provide a space for middle and high school girls to use science to investigate and solve real problems in their community. The ladies chose to focus on the health of Hicklin Lake (which neighbors our school) for their project this year. This is our first year as a club, and we have students from Cascade and the neighboring Evergreen High school as members. A few students from Mount Rainier High School help us out, as well. STARS is run as a joint effort between Cascade (Anna Kramer, science teacher), HS3/Evergreen (Liz Savage, science teacher), and the University of Washington (Sara Hagenah, doctoral student).

(Tonight) we are hosting a film event at the Highline Performing Arts Center. We are premiering a documentary that our students made that showcases what we have learned about the lake, as well as what the ladies are doing about it.

Who: Everyone is invited!
What: The premiere of the first STARS documentary, focused on the issues that currently exist at Hicklin Lake and how we are tackling this problem with our science knowledge
When: Tuesday, April 15th at 6:30 pm
Where: Highline Performing Arts Center, Highline High School, 401 S 152nd St, Burien, WA 98148
Why: Join us in order to:
*Support local students as their share a year of learning and action with you
*Learn more about what’s wrong with Hicklin Lake and what you can do to help
*Support the idea that girls and women have powerful voices in science and in their communities
*Other info: Event is free, and refreshments will be provided. STARS members will be recognized individually, the documentary will be shown, and there will be a short Q & A session. Spanish and (we hope) Arabic interpreters will be available with headsets.

For more information, email anna.kramer@highlineschools.org.

White Center Spring Clean 2014: Register now!

March 26th, 2014 Tracy Posted in How to Help, White Center Community Development Association, White Center news Comments Off on White Center Spring Clean 2014: Register now!

Almost Spring Clean time – three dates this year, according to this announcement from Vy Nguyen at the White Center Community Development Association:

The White Center Community Development Association (WCCDA) is gearing up for 2014 Spring Clean events to take place April 12, May 10, and June 7. White Center Spring Clean is an opportunity for volunteers and residents to take part in an annual spruce up of White Center through projects aimed at cleaning up and beautifying the neighborhood.

“Spring Clean is a hands-on way to get involved in making your community, literally, a better place. Whether it’s gardening, graffiti removal, bringing in more art or whatever is identified as a community need: everyone in White Center benefits from having a neighborhood with cleaner and improved spaces to show that people in this community care about where they live and/or run a business,” says White Center CDA’s business district manager, Vy Nguyen. “Spring Cleans are fun and a great way to connect with others that care about community, plus a way to score a free I ‘heart’ White Center t-shirt!”

Spring Clean projects come from the community, as WCCDA supports resident-led action in White Center’s development. Each day will start at the White Center CDA office (605 SW 108th St. Seattle 98146) with a light breakfast before volunteers go to their project assignments. Past projects have included: gardening at various sites around White Center, trash pick-up in White Center’s business district, graffiti removal, as well as painting murals throughout the neighborhood. WCCDA’s Spring Cleans brings in close to 300 volunteers for 20-25 projects each year.

If you have an idea or see a need in the White Center community for a Spring Clean project or if you’d like to volunteer and get involved in the community, register online at: http://bit.ly/1nl9Vy8 or contact Vy Nguyen (vy@wccda.org) or Marquise Roberson (marquise@wccda.org).
