Nature and art together made for quite a show at New Start High School over the weekend. Gill Loring shares the photos from the celebration of art at the school’s renowned community garden:

The garden has an amazing backstory – including the fresh-grown produce it donates to the White Center Food Bank, more than a ton last year alone!

The New Start High School Summer Garden Program wrapped up Thursday with an open house. Thanks to Gill Loring for the photos! Highline Schools Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield visited to check out the gardens. They grew many things, from flowers …

… to lettuce …

… to pumpkins!

Art too, as shown by this student:

Teachers from the Highline School District alternative programs get ready to shop.

Last week World Vision teamed up with the Westwood Village Target to help out some local teachers and families. Everyone was given a $100 gift card then let loose in the store; families bought school clothes and teachers stocked up on school supplies. Considering that teachers spend on average $500 of their own money on school supplies each year, this was a much appreciated big deal.

Today’s the day: Buy books, help New Start!

January 29th, 2009 Tracy Posted in How to Help, New Start High School 2 Comments »

Today’s the day for a big fundraiser for White Center’s New Start High School. As Paul Fischburg put it in a letter we published in its entirety earlier this month:

On Thursday 1/29, all day, when you buy anything at the Barnes and Noble at Westwood Village shopping center and show them the attached flyer, a portion of the sales will be donated to New Start for the library. Better yet, books on New Start’s wishlist will be on display and you can buy one directly for the library. Even better still, come on down between 6:30 and 8:00 pm, and view student art work, hear readings of student writings and enter a drawing to win an ice cream party at White Center’s own Full Tilt Ice Cream!

You can download and print the flyer, which has the voucher number, here.
