Grant to benefit Cascade students (and other Highline middle schools)

October 17th, 2009 Tracy Posted in Schools, White Center news Comments Off on Grant to benefit Cascade students (and other Highline middle schools)

White Center’s Cascade Middle School is getting a boost from a new grant, along with other middle schools in Highline Public Schools. Here’s the official announcement made today:

Highline Public Schools has been awarded a grant to expand community schools programs at Chinook and Cascade middle schools and establish programs at Sylvester and Pacific middle schools. The initial $200,000 award is part of a five-year $1 million grant funded by The Seattle Foundation and the Raikes Foundation.

Highline partners with the non-profit Community Schools Collaboration to provide academic and enrichment programs to students after school, as well as other support services to student and their families. The partnership will use the grant funds to create a support system that will help students achieve their maximum potential in school, work and life, including programs that ease the elementary school-to-middle school and middle school-to-high school transitions.

“This initiative helps schools connect to nonprofits and other neighborhood resources in ways that really make a difference for middle-schoolers in our community,” Michael Brown, vice president of community leadership at The Seattle Foundation.

“We are grateful for the Seattle Foundation’s investment in Highline and the prospect of a long-term partnership,” said John Welch, superintendent of Highline Public Schools. “Thanks to the Foundation’s funding, many of our students will benefit from academic support and enrichment programs that will effectively extend their school day and their opportunities for learning.”

The Seattle Foundation is the oldest and largest community foundation in the region. It’s mission is create a healthy community through engaged philanthropy, community knowledge and leadership.

The Raikes Foundation is a private family foundation focused on support for young adolescents so that they can grow up to be healthy, contributing members of society.

School is starting; slow down at crosswalks if you don’t want to be cited

September 3rd, 2009 Ricardo Posted in Boulevard Park, Schools, White Center Comments Off on School is starting; slow down at crosswalks if you don’t want to be cited

Although Seattle’s schools don’t start until next week, Holy Family on Roxbury Avenue at 20th SW has already started.  There is a crosswalk, right in front of the school, on the very busy Roxbury Avenue.  Problem is, that most days, drivers are whizzing along well above the speed limit, never mind the cross-walk limit.  Be warned that this crosswalk is ALWAYS, and I mean always, manned by police.  And the cross-walk is at the crest of a hill, making it less noticeable.  Our advice, slow down at all crosswalks, since SPD and other law enforcement are going to be vigorously enforcing the speed limit at school crossings.  Besides, kids are using these crosswalks and need I say more.  Be safe and be smart.

Shorewood Christian’s new high-school program sets open house

January 21st, 2009 Tracy Posted in Schools, White Center news Comments Off on Shorewood Christian’s new high-school program sets open house

Just west of White Center, Shorewood Christian School has been expanding into the high-school grades, and just sent this announcement of its upcoming open house:

(Shorewood Christian School) will be having an Open House on February 10th from 8:30am-3pm. The early enrollment process for the 2009-2010 school year has begun.

Celebrating their 29th Anniversary, this is a big milestone year for Shorewood Christian. The high school is currently in the expansion development phase with this upcoming school year being the first year offering 10th grade. Each subsequent year, they will be adding 11th, and 12th grade. By the year 2011, they will be a full service school offering prekindergarten through 12th grade. The school is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and is approved by the State of Washington. Shorewood Christian School is open to many denominations with over 20 churches represented in their student body and staff.

Students at Shorewood Christian benefit from an unparalleled educational experience. It is a school of academic excellence, offering specialty classes including Spanish, Music, Drama, P.E., Art, Typing, Home Economics, and Bible. Currently, their athletic program includes: Flag Football, Cross Country, Track, Volleyball, and Basketball. In addition, they are also taught how to give back to the community locally and to the world globally by participating in such projects as feeding the homeless, serving at food banks, visiting nursing homes, and going on mission trips abroad.

Tim Lorenz, Principal of Shorewood Christian, explains, “”I am very excited about what God is doing here at Shorewood Christian School. The decision to move forward and expand into a high school program is an important and logical step for us. I believe our students (at all levels – elementary, secondary, and ultimately college) ought to be instructed from a Biblical worldview which emphasizes first and foremost a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Out of that relationship, we want to help students cultivate their gifts and talents so that they may be used for God’s Kingdom and glory. For me, it is all about coming alongside parents and laying a firm foundation spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically as well as giving our students opportunities to hear God’s voice and surrender to His call and purpose for their lives.”

Shorewood Christian is committed to not only academic excellence, but also keeping education affordable. Their tuition is one of the most affordable private school rates in all of Seattle! K-6th grade is only $440/month, 7th & 8th grade is $470/month, and 9th & 10th grade is $590/month. For more
information on the open house, arranging a private tour, or to enroll, you can contact them at: Shorewood Christian School, 10300 28th Ave. SW Phone: 206-933-1056 www.ShorewoodChristianSchool.org

Need to buy books? Wait a few weeks – and help New Start!

January 11th, 2009 Tracy Posted in How to Help, Schools Comments Off on Need to buy books? Wait a few weeks – and help New Start!

We’ve had this fundraiser for White Center’s New Start High School, coming up 1/29, on the White Center Now Events Calendar for a few days. Now, a letter from Paul Fischburg:

Hey friends,

As many of you know, I’ve been volunteering to help New Start High School in White Center create a school library. New Start started as a King County funded after-school program for kids who were skipping school and hanging out in downtown White Center. After a few years of great success, King County funding ran out and with tremendous commitment, the Highline School District took New Start from a small storefront helping a few kids, to a growing alternative high school for about 120 kids who haven’t succeeded in traditional schools. Last year, New Start graduated its first class of seniors!

Working with teachers, students, and Michael Sita, the school principal and head of alternative programs in the Highline District, I designed the library and raised $15,000 in addition to donated computers to get the library started. Andrea Love, a new para-educator at New Start, scavenged district furniture got the library set up and running, ordered and catalogued books, and uses the library as her office to work with students individually and in groups.

We don’t want to stop there and you can help.

On Thursday 1/29, all day, when you buy anything at the Barnes and Noble at Westwood Village shopping center and show them the attached flyer, a portion of the sales will be donated to New Start for the library. Better yet, books on New Start’s wishlist will be on display and you can buy one directly for the library. Even better still, come on down between 6:30 and 8:00 pm, and view student art work, hear readings of student writings and enter a drawing to win an ice cream party at White Center’s own Full Tilt Ice Cream!

You can download and print the flyer, which has the voucher number, here.
