Video: King County Sheriff’s Office investigating Top Hat killing
(WCN photos by Patrick Sand)
5:24 PM: A homicide investigation is under way in the 10700 block of Myers Way S. (map) in Top Hat, east of White Center. Discussion monitored via scanner earlier indicated that a shooting suspect was taken into custody in the 10800 block of 8th S. That’s all we know so far, but the King County Sheriff’s Office’s spokesperson Sgt. DB Gates is en route and our crew should have more information soon.
5:57 PM UPDATE: Sgt. Gates told media at the scene that the suspect and victim, both in their 20s, both live in the area where the shooting happened and had been in a dispute over some kind of “property.” They are still questioning the suspect; the shooting happened outdoors and the victim’s body has not yet been removed from the scene.
7:14 PM: Added video of the full briefing by Sgt. Gates (above).

This is about three blocks from my house. The availability of guns is completely out of control. We need to elect legislators that enact laws that make it more difficult to buy guns. Today, one life was taken away, and the perpetrator will probably spend the majority of his life in prison.

The availability of guns? How about the availability of violent young criminals who find it so easy to simply kill another person in cold blood over something as petty as property? Hundreds of millions of respectful, law-abiding Americans own guns and don’t even hurt flies with them. Turning the blame away from the perpetrator of the crime to an object is a foolish, knee-jerk, bumper sticker reaction. A young man was killed by the hand of another young man due to the disrespect of human life. It’s as simple as that.

You are right — there are so many wonderful people in this neighborhood. But we’ve gotten too complacent! When the good people don’t stand up for themselves and their neighborhood, the not-so-good people start to get cocky.
#Top Hat Pride!

Sheriff,
I am one of several neighbors who have recently been victimized by an upswing in crime in our neighborhood. The recent homicide on our block is the cherry on top of the sundae.
We look to you for guidance and support.
What actions can the neighborhood and the Sheriff’s Office take to turn our neighborhood around?
Your prompt reply would be appreciated.
Sincerely,

Thirty years ago, when young people got in fights it would have been with fists. There IS greater availability of guns, and the NRA and gun manufacturers are lobbying legislators to allow powerful semi-automatic weapons to be available to almost anyone. If you don’t think more people are murdered with guns than they were 30 years ago, because of deregulation, then you need to look up the stats from 30 years ago. England and Canada have very few gun-related murders every year. It’s because they have tougher gun policies that the US. How do you know these young people were violent criminals? The one man who pulled the trigger is now considered a violent criminal because he was somehow able to get a gun. The victim was loved by his family. I think that instead of throwing up our hands at the “criminals,” we should own that poverty and lack of opportunity may contribute to unlawful behavior. We need to figure out how to support young people, so that they have an opportunity for an education and experience success, instead of failure.

Form a Block Watch or two or three. They work. People get to know each other and care more for their neighborhood. Check with the KC Sheriff’s office.

@Marlene Allbright: You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. 30 years ago there was no instant background check (NICS) for all new gun purchases like we’ve had since the mid-90’s. There were no waiting periods as there are now, like we’ve had since 1994. We have more gun control regulations than ever these days and more gun crime than ever. Nearly every type of handgun is “semi-automatic”, including all double-action revolvers. Please do some research before you attack gun rights.

if you want to blame someone blame the liberal media for this up-rush in shootings..the violent shoot-um up television programs that flood the television and video that are on every channel on the tv.give the kids the idea that gunfire solves everything. hollywood’s social engineering project is working good ,they are turning this country into a police state, with their socialist/liberal agenda.
