Students at STEM Partner School to Showcase Projects at Science Fair

WHEN: Thurs, Feb 14th, 2013, 6‐8 pm
Project demonstrations begin at 6:15 pm

WHERE: Bethaday Community Learning Space; 605 SW 108th St., Seattle, WA 98146

WHAT: 9th and 10th graders from TAF Academy will showcase their science projects at the school’s first annual Science Fair. Project judges will include science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals and researchers. Many of these projects are expected to move on to the Regional Science Fair in March and Washington State University’s Imagine Tomorrow Energy Competition. Some might go to the state competition and ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair). Visuals and audio will include:

• Students demonstrating their projects ‐ about 30 projects overall, including:
‐ How to Create a Carbon Footprint Calculator App
‐ The Effect of Copper and Radiation on Dog Cells
‐ The Effect of Extreme Weather on Sustainable Rooftop Farming
‐ How to Create a Triple Power Energy Source
• Researchers from the University of Washington sharing their work on the famous Higgs Boson particle
• Awards ceremony

WHY: TAF Academy is a STEM‐focused public school with a high percentage of minority and lowincome students. The school, located in Kent, is co‐managed by Federal Way Public Schools and TAF, a nonprofit. Members of TAF Academy’s first graduating class (2012) went on to some of the world’s top STEM university programs. The Bethaday Community Learning Space, where the Fair will be held, opened in fall 2012.
